PAY GRADE RANGE (effective July 1st, 2019: $ 34,401 - $ 50,295 annually (Pay Grade 5)

JOB DESCRIPTION: Under general supervision, drives a semi-truck (i.e., eighteen-wheel tractor trailer) to transport items to and from specified destinations (trash from Transfer Station to a landfill).

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Unless stated otherwise, applicants must possess and/or meet the following minimum requirements prior to the application deadline.

• Current City Employees may apply, but must have completed initial Civil Service probationary period and must have received a satisfactory performance rating on their last evaluation to receive promotional preference.

• Must possess a Tennessee Class A Commercial Driver’s License without restriction 57 and without E restriction as required by state law.

• Must obtain DOT medical card within six (6) months of hire date.

• One (1) year of verifiable experience in driving a semi-truck. POSITION DESCRIPTION City of Knoxville Class GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Under general supervision, operates a semi-truck. SAFETY SENSITIVE This position is designated as Safety Sensitive.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Drives a semi-truck (i.e., eighteen-wheel tractor trailer) to transport items to and from specified destinations. (Trash from Transfer Station to a landfill) Hooks and unhooks trailer from truck including disconnecting and reattaching hydraulic hoses. Operates hydraulic equipment to empty trailer. Operates a company radio to communicate with supervisor. Checks materials to ensure trailer is loaded properly. Performs preventive maintenance inspection on semi-truck and equipment. Cleans equipment and tools. Performs other related work at the Transfer Station as required.

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS Cleans and washes semi-truck. Completes forms and submits required paperwork and documentation. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Ability to operate assigned heavy equipment (e.g., semi-truck, highlifts, backhoes, etc.) for extended periods under unfavorable climatic conditions. Knowledge of basic mechanical problems which may make equipment unsafe to operate. Knowledge of procedures used to maintain heavy equipment. Knowledge of the care and use of motor vehicles. Knowledge of operating limitations of a semi-truck. Knowledge of proper loading procedures for a semi-truck. Knowledge of State and City traffic regulations. Knowledge of safety precautions, practices, and procedures. Knowledge of occupational hazards. Ability to understand and follow simple oral and written instructions. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees. Ability to read and write at a minimal level. Ability to maintain a Tennessee Class A Commercial Driver’s License without restriction 57 and without E restriction as required by State Law.  

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS This position consists of primarily heavy work, requiring the incumbent to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 50 pounds (or less) of force frequently, in order to lift/carry, push/pull, or otherwise move objects. MENTAL REQUIREMENTS This position uses relevant principles and procedures to solve practical problems and to deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
