Cooper is one of eight skilled trades educators nationwide honored with a $10,000 classroom grant

Knoxville, Tn. (Oct. 27) — Tennessee College of Applied Technology (TCAT) Knoxville Automotive Technology instructor Bobby Cooper has been named a 2026 Carhartt Steel Apple Award recipient. The award honors educators across the country who are preparing the next generation of skilled trades professionals.

Now in its second year, the Steel Apple Awards honor eight high school and college instructors in construction, welding, advanced manufacturing and automotive technology. Each recipient receives a $10,000 grant to support and expand their trade education program. Cooper was among four automotive educators recognized through Carhartt’s partnership with TechForce Foundation and Ford.

Cooper has taught Automotive Technology at TCAT Knoxville since January 2024, bringing more than 33 years of industry experience to the classroom. A Toyota Expert Certified and ASE-certified technician, he is also a proud TCAT Knoxville alumnus who has come full circle by returning to the college where his journey began. He is passionate about sharing his knowledge and helping students build successful careers in the automotive industry.

"I feel blessed to be able to get up in the morning and go to a job I really like and try to make a difference in young people’s lives,” Cooper said. “My students are why I work at TCAT Knoxville. I hope that when they graduate, they find a solid career path in automotive technology.”

“Having Bobby Cooper recognized by Carhartt is a proud moment for TCAT Knoxville,” said TCAT Knoxville President Kelli Chaney. “Our instructors bring their industry experience into the classroom every day, but their greatest impact is helping students see what they are capable of achieving. This honor recognizes Bobby’s commitment to his craft, his students and the skilled workforce our communities depend on.”

Cooper’s students also shared in the recognition, receiving Carhartt backpacks, beanies and gift cards to support their educational journey.

Cooper’s achievement highlights the importance of experienced instructors in preparing students for in-demand careers. New research from the Alliance for America’s Skilled Trades finds that training programs are preparing just 55 skilled trades workers for every 100 needed. Through hands-on instruction and guidance from industry professionals like Cooper, TCAT Knoxville prepares students with the skills they need to enter the workforce and help meet the needs of employers across East Tennessee.
