KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee College of Applied Technology (TCAT) Knoxville, in partnership with Knox County Schools and Knox County Mayor Glenn Jacobs, today announced plans to launch the TCAT Knoxville Skilled Trades Collegiate High School, a new approach to technical education that will give Knox County students a direct pathway to earn a TCAT Knoxville diploma alongside their high school diploma.
Aligned in part with the district's existing 865 Academy dual-enrollment model, students will remain enrolled at and connected to their base high school while traveling to the TCAT Knoxville Skilled Trades Collegiate High School for technical instruction.
The initiative is targeting an August 2027 launch and will operate within TCAT Knoxville's campus at 3435 Division Street in Knoxville. Transportation will be provided, giving students access to TCAT Knoxville's classrooms, labs and industry-trained instructors without requiring participating high schools to modify their existing spaces, curricula or staffing.
The TCAT Knoxville Skilled Trades Collegiate High School will initially serve students from West High School, with plans to welcome students from additional high schools as the model grows. The space will also create opportunities to expand access to technical courses and training for other student populations, including homeschool students and participants in TCAT Knoxville's Foster Youth Forward program.
"This really builds on the dual enrollment opportunities we already offer and takes them a step further by creating a dedicated educational experience for students to begin their technical education while they are still in high school," said TCAT Knoxville President Kelli Chaney. "We believe every student should have the chance to discover what they're capable of and see a clear path to their future. Whether their next step is a career, an apprenticeship or continued education, the TCAT Knoxville Skilled Trades Collegiate High School will give students a tremendous head start. We're not just preparing students for jobs, we're helping them build a future."

The initiative also supports economic mobility by preparing students for high-demand careers, competitive wages and long-term opportunities for advancement. Through technical training and industry-recognized credentials, students will build a strong foundation for entering the workforce, pursuing an apprenticeship or continuing their education.
"I am proud of this unique partnership, which will enable students to walk the stage at graduation and receive two diplomas: one from KCS and one from TCAT Knoxville," said Knox County Mayor Glenn Jacobs. "This partnership will help remove barriers for students to find gainful employment within the skilled trades and expand their employment opportunities upon leaving high school."
